Sow zinnias outdoors in rich, moist, well-drained soil, after the danger of frost has passed and daytime temperatures are above 55-60o F. Cover the seeds with a minimal amount of soil. Once the seedlings reach 3-4 inches tall, thin them to one plant every 10-12 inches. As zinnias are prone to mildew, water carefully at the bottom of the plant to avoid wetting the stems or leaves. Zinnias will thrive with a bit of neglect, so let the soil dry out a bit between waterings. In colder climates, start the seeds inside 4 weeks before the last frost and transplant them outside after hardening.

Encourage more zinnias by deadheading whenever the flowers look tired or worn. Simply cut the stems diagonally, above a fresh set of leaves, and a new bloom should grow.
